Why Shenzhen?

Shenzhen is the first city in China to develop policies focused on building a "child-friendly city." Since 2015, it has been constructing policies and institutional support systems, along with a series of community development guidelines that cover areas such as communities, schools, libraries, hospitals, parks, and transportation systems.

Shenzhen is making significant efforts in four areas - policy-friendly, space-friendly, service-friendly, and participation-friendly - to promote the construction of a "child-friendly city." By maximising the activation of children's potential, it is also illuminating the future of the city.

Yitian Community Child-friendly Playground

—— Shenzhen's first community-level child-friendly park

Its design purpose is to provide a natural play space that satisfies the outdoor needs of children of different ages, as well as serving as a gathering place for families in the community. Based on these objectives, the park considers the needs of children of different age groups in the design of game functions, creating two distinct routes - an accessible playground and a natural adventure route - allowing children of different ages and needs to explore independently. Caregivers of children are also the key users of the park, and the design and placement of rest facilities in the park are well thought out.
Shenzhen Women & Children’s Building

—— Innovative public service complex

The Shenzhen Women & Children’s Building, which started in 1994, initiated a renovation project in June 2020. In the summer of 2023, the complex became a new landmark for Shenzhen as a child-friendly city, providing comprehensive services for women and children. Due to its vibrant colors, unique design, and rich imagination, it is referred to as the "Kaleidoscope" by people. The Shenzhen Women & Children’s Building explores the potential development of child-friendly spaces by introducing various charitable organisations and children's services through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
